EPDM Rubber Roofing

EPDM is a synthetic rubber sheet designed for flat roofing. On most extension, garage and dormer roofs it can be cut from one large sheet, so there are no lapped joints across the middle of the roof for water to work into. It stays supple through the winter and moves with the building as timbers expand and shrink.

Regent Roofing fits Rubbercover EPDM. The old covering is removed and the deck checked, with soft boards replaced or the roof overboarded where needed. The membrane is then bonded down with adhesive, so no flame is used on the roof, and finished with edge trims, with the rubber dressed up any abutting walls.

A rubber roof suits plain, rectangular roofs especially well, where a single sheet covers the whole area. Roof lights, outlets and pipes are detailed with matching EPDM pieces and sealed. If your roof has a lot of awkward shapes or will take regular foot traffic, GRP fibreglass may suit it better, and you will be told so.

FAQs

EPDM Rubber Roof Questions

What Is an EPDM Rubber Roof?

EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer, a synthetic rubber made into large sheets for flat roofs. It is laid over a timber deck, bonded with adhesive and finished with trims, giving a flexible covering that resists sunlight and frost.

Can EPDM Be Fitted in One Piece?

On most domestic flat roofs, yes. Rubbercover EPDM comes in sheet sizes large enough to cover a typical extension, garage or dormer without joins. Larger roofs may need a seam, which is made with a dedicated joining tape.

Can EPDM Be Used on a Balcony or Terrace?

EPDM is designed mainly for roofs that see occasional maintenance rather than daily use. For a roof that people will stand on often, GRP fibreglass is usually the better choice, and that is explained when the roof is inspected.

Does Fitting a Rubber Roof Involve Heat?

No. Rubbercover EPDM is bonded to the deck with adhesives, so no torches or hot bitumen are needed. That removes a fire risk during fitting, which is useful on roofs close to timber, windows or a neighbouring property.

What Colour Is an EPDM Roof?

EPDM is black. On most flat roofs the surface cannot be seen from the ground, but if your roof is overlooked from upstairs windows, it is worth knowing before you choose between rubber and GRP, which can be finished in other colours.

Can a Damaged EPDM Roof Be Patched?

Yes. A cut or puncture in EPDM can be cleaned and covered with a patch of the same material bonded over the damage. Most damage comes from sharp objects or foot traffic, so keeping access to the roof limited helps.
